Whether you opt for a beautiful planter or a flowering patio pot that steals the show from the neighborhood, you need to add colour to your outdoor décor, but above all, you need to make the right combinations and position them properly in the pot to ensure abundant and uniform blooms all summer long.
Combine the right plants for a perfect composition
Your planter must be visually balanced. You will have to fill your pot well, but also play with heights and textures. Each type of plant will have its role to play. Be careful to respect the needs of the plants and not to plant, for example, flowers that prefer the sun with flowers that prefer shady areas. Here are the 3 types of plants to prioritize for a perfect composition:
1. THRILLER PLANTS
First, choose the plant that will be at the heart of your arrangement for its height or colour. It will give personality to your creation. We want it to be massive and tall! Generally, it is a plant with a large spread such as: pennisetums, cannas, banana trees or colocas.
2. FILLER PLANTS
These plants add colour and life. Choose interesting foliage, a bushy habit and not too massive flowers that will give texture to your arrangement. Opt for annuals that will contrast or support your main plant such as: verbenas, geraniums or petunias.
3. SPILLER PLANTS
They are placed at the edges of the pot and then fall back slightly to allow the effect of color and abundance to continue. Lemon Coral Sedum, Begonia Santa Cruz Sunset, Scalevola or Calibrachoas are excellent choices to play this role in your arrangements.
Which colours to choose: combining the right colours
For a perfect planter, you must choose a winning colour combination. You could choose to combine several complementary colours or opt for a more monochromatic style.
-
Using complementary colours
To add contrast and make the colours of your flower containers stand out, we suggest you choose a complementary colour scheme, such as red with green, orange with blue or yellow with purple. For an even bolder look, opt for bright colours by matching the colour of your pot to your flower arrangement. Success guaranteed!
-
Create monochromatic containers
In addition to being trendy, monochromatic is a fairly easy technique. It consists of creating a single-colour pattern by using at least two shades of a single colour. For example, if you’re going for pink, you could combine light and dark pink, or even white. To pull off this style, also be sure to choose a neutral coloured pot.
-
Use plants with decorative foliage
Beauty is not just in the flowers. There are more and more beautiful varieties of plants with colourful and original foliage that you could add to your containers to not only add colour, but also to vary the textures.
