You have a surplus of fresh herbs, here are a few storage ideas so you can enjoy their flavours year-round!
Two storage methods:
It’s easy to microwave dry or freeze herbs. Yes, you can microwave them dry! However, proceed with caution, as a few seconds too long and your herbs could go up in smoke!
To microwave dry:
- Wash the herbs and pat dry with paper towel
- Spread over a single layer between two paper towels
- Microwave on high for around 90 seconds
- Turn over and continue for 30-second intervals until the herbs are dry and brittle
- Store in sealed jars
To freeze:
- Wash the herbs and pat dry with paper towel
- Chop finely
- Place the different herbs in freezer bags, taking care to identify and date them
- Freeze
Give it a twist!
Chopped, minced, shredded or whole, herbs are an ideal garnish and enhancer for mains, beverages and even desserts! Here are a few original pairings:
- Strawberries with basil
- Blueberries with maple syrup and rosemary
- Pina Colada with pineapple, dill, chives and mint
- Cake with lemon and thyme
- Bread rolls with chives, oregano, thyme and parsley
- Muffins with apricot and thyme
